Biography

Fred Nehring was born in New York City and attended high school at Carson Long Military Institute, graduating in 1974.

In 1975 he joined the US Navy and served three years aboard the USS Philadelphia SSN 690 as an Internal Communications Technician and qualified submariner. Honorably discharged in 1978 he went on to serve in the reserves while attending college with the help of the GI Bill.

Fred became involved in New York City's Homesteading Program and organized a homestead group that renovated a small building in the South Bronx and also helped to organize Homesteaders Federal Credit Union and later became its manager.

He left the credit union world and New York City in 1998 to pursue a calmer lifestyle and get out from behind a desk.

His hobbies include gardening, woodworking and reading.
